Waterberg Region
Limpopo Province
The
mountain range of the Waterberg in the Limpopo Province - 150
kilometre in length - reaches from Thabazimbi in the south-west
to the Lapalala river in the north-east. With 2100 metres the
Kransberg mountain near Thabazimbi is the highest elevation.
The Waterberg's landscape is wild and authentically African. Wide savannahs
with acacias, aloes and succulents are surrounded by rugged mountain ranges.
Only a few tarred roads lead through the area.
The climate in the Waterberg is subtropical. It is sultry
in the rainy season - November to March. Then most of the many
rivers in the Waterberg rise substantially and roads, especially
the dirt roads, can become impassable quickly. The winters,
however, are dry and pleasantly warm.
The Waterberg is prime game country and provides ideal conditions
for basically all African big game species. Because the entire
region has no malaria, many private game reserves with lodges
opened up over the past few years. The Marakele National Park
- although it might be difficult to access without a four-wheel-drive
- is very much worth a visit. |
