One
hour north of Port Elizabeth lies Sapkamma
the plains game Mecca
Of the Eastern Cape, known
to have one of the heaviest concentrations of kudu in South
Africa
With
its rolling hills and many valleys it makes the walk and stalk
hunt and interesting affair as you get a surprise in every valley
you peep into. The valley
bushveld
is reasonably dense in these valleys with trophy Animals lying
up in them, one has to be very quiet when walking into them
As you encounter the animals at close quarters. Shots of 70
to 90 yds are Common. We also drive and glass and then get off
for the stalk. Bush types found in abundance are the wild
plum tree, spekboom, gwarry in the river beds you find the karoo
acacia with karoo bush being the shortest. Grasses, the
blue buffalo and kweek found allover. Our bush types are not
Very high (6 to 8ft) but makes for good stalking. We are also
in an area That has the odd windy day and this allows one to
get really close. Most of our shots are taken from shooting
sticks and hunters should practice Shooting off them, they steady
ones aim considerably. There are two types Namely the tripod
and bipod , 6ft in length they are strapped together about 6
Inches from the top by motorcar tube. Bringing a Harris bipod
along is not a bad idea. Stay away from nylon clothing , cotton
types in camo are great , not too heavy days are hot .
Short
pants are popular with clients and go down well with the heat.
Make sure you have enough suntan lotion or sun block for the
fairskins. A typical hunting day starts at just before
daybreak with coffee , we find Most hunters preferring to have
a later breakfast therefore a cooler box is packed And during
the morning we find some shade and have something to eat and
drink. We push through the day hunting hard and only returning
to the lodge if we have shot our animals . Kudu
and Bushbuck are mostly hunted
in the evenings we set up early in the afternoons and wait up
for them to appear just before dark. This method works well
as one can select good trophies and a get good shot off. We
always have a tracker on the hunt and his eyes are invaluable
when moving around on the ranch or walking in thick bush for
spotting good trophies. When arriving back in the evenings
at the hunting camp you will be greeted by a cold South African
beer and a fire burning. The days hunting is discussed and good
fellowship around the fire is enjoyed. A tasty farm cooked dinner
is prepared and wines are served with all evening meals. ( game
shot is also sampled). The rooms are comfortable en suite with
showers and our area is malaria free.
Hunting
is done on vast ranges of land, ranging from typical South African
plains, to steep hills where the kudu,
and bushbuck like to hideout.
We take a very limited number of hunters. This way we can assure
the quality of your safari, both in the trophies you take from
your African hunt and your overall enjoyment of the hunt.
We
look forward to having you join us for the very best plains
game that South Africa has to offer.
