| Eastern
Cape game reserves offer all the excitement of big-game viewing
in a malaria free area. We have many different options to
choose from when looking for game parks. Three of the best
in the area, and are a must see are Addo Elephant Park, Scotia
Private Game Reserve, and Shamwari Game Park. It is best
to take in at least two game parks on your visit to South Africa.
Deep
within the shadows of the dense valley of the Sundays River
region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant Park National
Park. Here, the evenings are punctuated by the strident
howl of the black backed jackal, and the francolin's call heralds
each new dawn. The park proclaimed in 1931, when only 11 elephants
remained in the area-today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary
to over 200 elephants, cape buffalo, a variety of antelope species,
as well as the unique flightless
dung beetle, found exclusively in Addo. Addo has the densest
population of elephant in the world.
Addo Elephant
Park is a must for all visitors to the Eastern Cape.
Climate:
Temperate to warm, with an annual rainfall of 450 mm occurring
throughout the year.
Addo
Day Drive: Addo Elephant
National Park has played a vital role in conserving the African
Elephant in the Cape region, allowing their numbers to multiply
from only 11 in 1031 to over 300 today. Addo Elephant
Park has the densest population of elephant in the
world, as well as the elusive cape buffalo, and black rhino.
The Addo day drive affords excellent opportunities of observing
elephants up close. Addo is also home to zebra, jackal,
suricate, red hartebeest, and the unique flightless dung beetle,
among others. Over 150 bird species have been recorded
in Addo, ranging from the ostrich to the tiny Cape white-eye.

Addo
Night Drive: The
night drive in Addo offers the best opportunity of seeing the
elusive cape buffalo, which became nocturnal as a means of avoiding
the hunters. There is also a great chance of seeing the
endangered black rhino. Apart from elephant, you may also
spot genet, jackal, bat-eared fox, and kudu. The night
game drive includes an African style dinner.
Shamwari Game Reserve:
Welcome
to Shamwari Game Reserve, 49000 acres the malaria free,
private game reserve situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa,
has received numerous international awards, including the World's
Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for five consecutive
years. It is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River,
halfway between Port Elizabeth (45 minutes drive outside the
city) and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive from Cape Town, forming
a natural extension to the famous Garden Route. Shamwari is
about conserving a vanishing way of life and is the realization
of one man's
dream, and the success of many people's passion. Steeped in
Settler history, and dating back to the time when a
multitude of game roamed wild and free, the 49,000 acre reserve
boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many forms
of plant, animal and bird life. Shamwari Game Reserve
will give you a mix of true African culture, and animal viewing.
Shamwari is often regarded as the best game park in South Africa,
and is a must for all visitors to the Eastern Cape. The
day experience starts with lunch. You will then visit
the village of Khaya Lendaba where you will experience African
rituals and customs, African dining methods, tribal dress codes,
traditional marriages, and story telling. An hour long
interaction with traditional Africa, in the heartland
of the Amazhosa, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. Then
go on a game drive with experienced rangers in open land rovers.
You will be able to view animals at close range, with excellent
opportunities for photographs.
