Description: One of the smallest and most colorful in south Africa .plumb or purplish brown, shading to light tan on back; pure white facial blaze, underparts, and lower legs.
Horns: 14"-15"long
Length: 4'8"-5'4"
Height: 3'
Weight: 123lb-189lb
Subspecies:
Blesbok: (D. d. phillipsi) Has less white on rump; tiny dark band interrupts white facial blaze; outer legs brown like upperparts.
Bontebok: Has darker coat contrasting with white rump patch that surrounds tail; lower legs are white all around; white facial blaze continuous from nose to base of horns.
Habitat: Grasslands of highveld and costal plains.
Breeding: 1 calf born September-February, after gestation of 8-8.5 months
This species can be resident or migratory. During the breeding season, spacing between territorial Blesbok males is reduced to only 80 yards, compared to 300 yards between territorial Bontebok males. This species was a dominant member of the once teeming highveld ecosystem: it has been narrowly saved from extinction. Several hundred Bonteboks survive in parks and reserves in southwestern Cape Province: privatization of wildlife led to the reintroduction of the Blesbok, which now numbers more than 50,000.
